Historic Home Landscape Restoration in Madison’s Regent Neighborhood
Older Madison neighborhoods like Regent carry a character that newer developments simply can’t replicate — mature trees, established setbacks, and homes built with real stone, brick, and wood. When this homeowner came to Four of Six Landscape, the goal was clear: restore the outdoor spaces to match that same quality and permanence. The result is a backyard that feels like it has always been there.
Natural Stone That Honors the Architecture
Choosing the right stone for a historic home isn’t about finding something “close enough.” It’s about understanding the texture, color range, and coursing of the original material — then sourcing stone that speaks the same language. For this Regent revival, we selected natural fieldstone that mirrors the tones found throughout the existing foundation and garden borders, creating visual continuity from the home’s exterior all the way to the rear yard.
The result is a patio and retaining wall system that looks genuinely rooted in the property — not installed over it. In mature neighborhoods, that distinction matters.
Outdoor Dining Space Built for Real Life
A well-designed outdoor dining area should feel like an extension of the home, not an afterthought. We built this space with a custom stone-edged dining terrace scaled for a full table and seating — generous enough for entertaining, intimate enough for a weeknight dinner. Level grade, proper drainage, and durable materials mean the surface holds up through Wisconsin seasons without heaving or settling.
Landscape Lighting That Works After Dark
Landscape lighting at its best doesn’t announce itself — it reveals. Low-voltage fixtures were positioned to graze the natural stone walls at a low angle, drawing out texture and depth that reads flat in daylight. The wood privacy structure is uplighted from the base, creating warm separation between the yard and the neighbor’s property without harsh glare. After-dark photos are included in the gallery above because that’s when the design really earns its place.
All fixtures are spec-grade, weather-sealed, and wired for long-term reliability — a detail that matters in Madison winters.
The Transformation: Before & After
The before images tell the familiar story of an older yard that has lost its structure — overgrown edges, undefined space, nothing that connects the house to the yard with intention. The after is a cohesive, layered landscape that respects the home’s age while giving the owners a space they actually want to spend time in. Browse the full before-and-after sequence in the gallery.
