Sun Prairie Pool Patio Design: Permeable Poolside Gallery

This Sun Prairie backyard had nearly reached its impermeable surface limit, which meant a traditional pool deck wasn’t an option. Permeable concrete and clay pavers solved that problem and opened the door to something better than a standard slab. A pool surround organized into four distinct zones for lounging, fire features, outdoor cooking, and dining. Custom carpentry ties the space together, providing screening, a sense of enclosure, and warm focal point lighting after dark. Large-textured plantings soften the hard edges of the deck and create a natural privacy buffer from neighboring sightlines, while a custom metal art piece mounted on a large-format stone slab greets guests at the entry, setting the tone for a space that’s clearly been designed with intention.

Solving the Impervious Surface Challenge with Permeable Pavers

This Sun Prairie pool patio came with a challenge: strict surface coverage limits that would have ruled out a traditional concrete deck. The solution was permeable concrete and clay pavers — materials that let rainwater filter directly into the ground, satisfy local stormwater requirements, and deliver a refined, textured finish that standard concrete can’t match.

A Pool Patio Designed With Purpose

Rather than one open slab, the pool surround is organized into distinct outdoor living zones, each with its own function and a natural flow between them.

  • Permeable Concrete & Clay Pavers – Durable, slip-resistant, and visually layered. A practical solution that looks great doing its job.
  • Custom Pergola & Privacy Screen – Anchors the space, creates a sense of enclosure without closing it off, and becomes a striking focal point after dark with integrated landscape lighting.
  • Natural Stone Seatwall – Borders the fire feature zone, adds casual seating, and ties the design together with a timeless material.
  • Gas Fire Bowl – Extends the season on cool Wisconsin evenings and becomes a natural gathering point after sunset.
  • Outdoor Kitchen, Grill Station & Bar – Everything needed to cook and entertain, built in and built to last.
  • Landscape Lighting – Woven throughout the pergola, hardscape, and planting beds for depth, texture, and safety after dark.
  • Custom Metal Art on Natural Stone Slab – A sculptural entry piece that sets the tone before guests even reach the pool deck.
  • Large-Textured Plantings – Selected for visual weight and privacy, softening the hard edges of the deck without feeling like filler.
